A BRIEF HISTORY OF HOSPICE
Modern-day hospice care traces its roots to Great Britain, where in 1967 Dame Cicely Saunders perceived the need to assist the terminally ill and their families with the dying process.
The first American hospice was established in 1974 in New Haven, Connecticut. Hospice care was no longer confined to "places" where someone could spend his or her last days. The emerging philosophy of hospice care included incorporating the necessary support systems so that the terminally ill could die at home, in a retirement or assisted living residence, or in a skilled nursing facility in the company of loved ones and dedicated caregivers.
Camarillo Hospice was established in August of 1978 as a community-based volunteer hospice. Since its beginning, Camarillo Hospice has trained hundreds of volunteers to assist with the care of patients and their families who are facing a life-limiting illness and/or dealing with grief.
